Georg Lurich 150

In 2026, 150 years since the birth of Georg Lurich will be celebrated. Modern Estonian sports culture is roughly the same age, having begun to take shape about a century and a half ago. Baltic Germans living in the region had started sporting activities somewhat earlier, but these remained relatively distant from the local population. It was the strongman Lurich who became the first widely recognised Estonian sports hero, inspiring later generations.

In modern terms, Lurich could be described as an influencer and trendsetter. At the same time, he worked as an athlete, coach, performer, manager and promoter of physical culture. Much of his activity in the development of modern sport in Estonia was ahead of its time.

The exhibition presents around 150 photographs and postcards reflecting different stages of Lurich’s life and career—from his early years before the age of twenty to the final year of his life. Many images were reproduced and circulated widely at the time.

Photographic postcards were one of the main visual media through which famous personalities were introduced to the public around the turn of the 20th century. They also help us understand how the public image of athletes was constructed.

Lurich was often compared to the biblical strongman Samson or the hero of Greek mythology Heracles. At the same time, postcards featuring cities such as Hamburg, Budapest and Chicago introduced Estonians to a much wider world.

Most postcards list Lurich’s place of origin as Reval (Tallinn), sometimes also Väike-Maarja. The country given is Russland—the Russian Empire—since Estonia did not yet exist as an independent state.

The photographs show Lurich alongside leading wrestlers of his time, demonstrating wrestling techniques and poses. Portraits of him in formal dress also highlight his place within Estonia’s cultural elite and support the view that he was, in his time, one of the best-known Estonians internationally.

The exhibition is open from April 22nd until autumn.
