Olympic bus started operating in Tartu city
On March 20, a special Olympic bus, which was created in cooperation between the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum, the city of Tartu and Go Bus was unveiled in Tartu Town Hall Square. The world's most unique Olympic bus, which is also the only electric bus on Tartu city lines, offers an exciting journey through Olympic history instead of a regular ride.
Public transport users can learn about the history of the Olympic Games, including exciting facts, symbols, mascots, and Estonian Olympic champions throughout the years, while also learning about the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The bus design showcases the global Olympic museum community with a map of the Olympic Museums Network, highlighting the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum's place within this international community.
"We can proudly say that Tartu, as an Olympic Museum City, is in a very special position on the world sports scene. The newly launched Olympic bus, a collaboration between the museum, the city government and Go Bus, is yet another innovative initiative that brings the people of Tartu an exciting overview of Estonia's dignified sports and Olympic history on a daily basis. It also confirms the city on the map of the international Olympic movement as a place worth keeping an eye on," said Siim Randoja, a member of the board of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum. He added that this special project was a continuation of the Sports Museum's Olympic activities, which had been undertaken in the city of Tartu and in the museum environment during the Olympic year, and it would certainly not be the last.
According to the Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas, this is a great initiative: "Tartu is a city where sports and exercise are well respected, but education is equally important to us. The Olympic Bus is a good example of how we can turn everyday city travel into an educational and inspiring experience - during a regular bus ride, people can now also experience Estonia's rich sporting heritage."
The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum is the largest sports museum in the Baltics on the main street of Tartu. It is one of the most modern sports museums in Europe, where you can test yourself in various sports and thereby learn about the history of Estonian sports. The Sports Museum, which was the first museum in Tartu to be awarded the Green Key eco-label in early 2025, stands for a more environmentally friendly mobility environment and, together with the city of Tartu, promotes the use of public transport.
