The Olympic spirit fills the home city of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum
To celebrate the XXV Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina, the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum, in cooperation with the City of Tartu, has illuminated four of Tartu’s bridges in Olympic colors. Additionally, visitors to the Town Hall Square can explore an Olympic and Paralympic-themed exhibition, ice skate to Olympic music, and take photos with a landmark dedicated to the Milano Cortina Games.
Four bridges in Tartu are lit in Olympic colors, with the iconic Kaarsild (“Arch bridge”) also playing the Olympic anthem daily. Both the light displays and the music will stay to delight the city until the Winter Games conclude on February 23rd.
To celebrate the performances of Estonian athletes, Tartu’s Old Town is filled with the Olympic spirit, serving as a gathering place for all sports fans. The museum's Olympic and Paralympic exhibition and the Milano Cortina photo landmark are open to visitors 24/7 until March 1st. Every day from 6 PM to 8 PM until the end of the Games, the ice rink features Winter Olympic theme songs and former Billboard number one hits from past opening ceremony dates.
Since the Olympics are the world's biggest sporting event, Siim Randoja, a member of the board of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum, states that the museum was pleased to bring a piece of it to Tartu. "In cooperation with the city of Tartu, we brought a part of the Olympic story to the town hall square and the Tartu urban space, and we want the Olympic movement to be as visible and experienced as possible in the city. Tartu is the ideal place for this, as the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum is located here," said Randoja.
Sten Svetljakov, Head of the Culture Department of the City of Tartu, noted that celebrating the Milano Cortina Olympic Games within the city is a prime example of the collaboration between the museum and the city. “The Olympic Games unite people all over the world through sport, movement and shared emotions. We are very pleased that, thanks to the strong and consistent work of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum, the Olympic movement is increasingly becoming a natural part of people’s everyday lives – whether through educational exhibitions, exciting activities or special solutions created in the city space. In cooperation with the museum, we brought a piece of the Olympic Games spirit to Tartu and offer Tartu residents and guests the opportunity to experience it in a special way,” said Svetljakov.
Beyond the activities in the city, the largest sports museum in the Baltics invites everyone to explore the history of the Olympic Games. Visitors can watch live broadcasts in the lobby, engage with interactive winter sports exhibits, and take part in themed games throughout the Olympic period.
