Environmental Policy of the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum
The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum aims to reduce the environmental impact of its activities to contribute to the social, environmental, and cultural well-being of society. The museum’s environmental and sustainability principles are aligned with its statutes and development plan for 2023. In setting its environmental principles, the museum has adhered to the guidelines and action criteria of the Estonian Environmental Management Association’s Green Museum and Green Key.
The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum has been awarded the Green Key certificate since March 2025.
The museum follows the following environmental and sustainability principles in its activities:
Reducing Environmental Impact
- We value and responsibly use essential resources and tools (electricity, water, paper) in our work, avoiding overconsumption.
- We reduce waste and promote recycling both within the team and among museum visitors.
- In construction and development work, as well as in the development of new services, environmental issues are taken into account, such as implementing energy-saving measures and using LED technology where possible.
- When introducing new equipment or materials, we prefer more environmentally friendly products when possible.
- We increase the use of the circular economy in the museum's activities and recycle materials as much as possible.
- In the creation of exhibitions, we strive to use sustainable solutions, environmentally friendly materials, and, where possible, create autonomous exhibits and their components (digital screens, display cases, general lighting, projectors, etc.), as well as reuse exhibition inventory (text walls, object labels, etc.) and content (as traveling exhibitions).
- We follow the guidelines for organizing environmentally friendly events in Tartu.
- The museum is heated through the city’s district heating system.
Community and Social Responsibility
- We organize environmental-themed exhibitions, educational programs, and projects related to the field of sports for target groups.
- We provide access to museum exhibitions (including audiovisual content) for people with disabilities (mobility, visual, and hearing impairments).
- The museum is easily accessible on foot, by bicycle, or by public transport to minimize the environmental impact of travel.
- Our museum shop offers products from Tartu and Estonian manufacturers, and we have gradually reduced the proportion of products imported from China.
Sustainable Work Culture
- We invest in raising employees’ environmental awareness by organizing information events and training on sustainability and environmental conservation.
- We follow the environmental-friendly museum worker's checklist.
- We ensure a good and healthy work environment for all employees.
- In the museum environment and its surroundings, visitors can request a cup for drinking tap water; visitors can also refill their water bottles with tap water.
- The museum visit can be linked to active movement in nature, with the nearby University of Tartu Botanical Garden, the Emajõgi River, and several parks.
The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum has had an environmental and sustainability working group in operation since November 2022.
